The Women’s Reservation Bill, officially the Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty-Eighth Amendment) Act, 2023, or Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, was introduced on September 19, 2023, to reserve 33% of seats in the Lok Sabha and State Legislative Assemblies for women.
The bill aims to increase women’s participation, with the reservation taking effect after the first delimitation post-2026 census.
Key details regarding the Women’s Reservation Bill:
• Targeted Representation: 33% (one-third) of seats in the Lok Sabha, state legislative assemblies, and the Delhi legislative assembly are reserved for women.
• Implementation Process: The quota will only apply after a census and subsequent delimitation (redrawing of constituency boundaries).
• Duration: The reservation is initially for 15 years, with the possibility of extension.
• Status Update (April 2026): Recent attempts in April 2026 to pass the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill to accelerate this process saw 298 votes in favor and 230 against, failing to meet the required two-thirds majority in the Lok Sabha.
• SC/ST Inclusion: The reservation applies to seats reserved for Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST).
The bill seeks to amend the constitution to add new articles, including Article 330A and Article 332A, specifically to implement these provisions.
