The issue of honorariums for Anganwadi workers, helpers and cooks has once again come into the spotlight in Madhya Pradesh. Amid political claims about women’s empowerment and the Ladli Behna Yojana, questions are being raised over the financial condition of women working at Anganwadi centres.

According to claims raised by workers and women’s groups, some Anganwadi cooks in Madhya Pradesh receive just ₹2,000 per month. In an era of rising prices, managing household expenses with such a small amount has become a major challenge.

During his tenure as Chief Minister, Shivraj Singh Chouhan made several announcements concerning women’s welfare, the Ladli Behna Yojana and increases in honorariums for Anganwadi personnel. However, workers and women’s groups allege that the expected financial relief has not reached the ground to the extent anticipated.

Kerala Comparison Raises Questions

The honorarium paid to Anganwadi personnel in Kerala is being cited as an example by those demanding better compensation in Madhya Pradesh. According to figures cited in the discussion, the monthly amount for comparable workers in Kerala is claimed to exceed ₹12,000.

However, honorarium structures, state government contributions and additional benefits differ across states. The exact figures and benefits need to be verified through official records before making a direct comparison.

Big Promises, But When Will Relief Arrive?

Women working at Anganwadi centres say that the government’s commitment to women’s empowerment must also translate into better financial security for those performing essential duties at the grassroots level.

They argue that cooks and helpers should receive compensation that reflects their workload and responsibilities. With household expenses continuing to rise, a monthly payment of ₹2,000 is inadequate to meet basic needs.

Workers are demanding a review of the honorarium structure, a substantial increase in monthly payments and transparency regarding the implementation of earlier announcements.

The Big Question

When will Anganwadi cooks and helpers in Madhya Pradesh receive a respectable monthly honorarium? Will the government take concrete steps to address their financial difficulties, or will these women have to continue waiting for the promises of better compensation to translate into reality?
