Chennai has taken a significant step towards modern urban transportation with the inauguration of a new section of the Chennai Metro Rail Phase-II project. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Poonamallee–Vadapalani stretch on October 11, 2026, in a major development aimed at improving connectivity and easing traffic congestion in Tamil Nadu’s capital.
Following the inauguration, Prime Minister Modi travelled on the metro alongside Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, popularly known as actor Thalapathy Vijay. Their joint metro ride became a key highlight of the event.
₹4,900-Crore Project with 11 Elevated Stations
The newly inaugurated corridor stretches approximately 15 kilometres and includes 11 elevated stations. The project is expected to improve connectivity for commuters travelling through the areas covered by the route and provide an additional public transport option.
3.7-Km Double-Decker Structure
One of the key features of the project is a double-decker structure measuring approximately 3.7 kilometres. The design reflects the use of modern engineering solutions to make better use of limited space in a rapidly expanding metropolitan city.
The corridor is also associated with driverless metro technology, highlighting the growing role of advanced systems in the development of urban public transportation.
Better Connectivity and Reduced Traffic Pressure
The expansion of Chennai’s metro network is expected to make daily commuting more convenient and improve connections between important parts of the city. A stronger public transport system could also help reduce dependence on private vehicles and ease pressure on busy roads.
The project’s long-term benefits will depend on regular service operations, passenger accessibility, operating schedules and integration with other metro routes.
A Step Towards Modern Urban Mobility
The inauguration marks an important milestone in Chennai’s metro expansion. With modern infrastructure and advanced technology, the new corridor represents another step towards building a more efficient and convenient public transportation network for the city.
