A major controversy has erupted regarding the new bridge being constructed parallel to the existing Wakankar Bridge in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh. According to media reports, the bridge’s alignment was allegedly shifted by 30 to 35 degrees, resulting in an increase of approximately 100 meters in its length. It is alleged that this modification was made to spare the land of certain influential figures, thereby placing an additional financial burden on the state exchequer.

The design change has also impacted the Smart City project. A parking facility, constructed at a cost of approximately ₹2.5 crore, already exists at the location where the new bridge is set to land. Consequently, the future of this parking facility has now come under scrutiny.

The issue has heated up the state’s political landscape. The opposition has demanded an impartial inquiry, citing a disregard for technical standards and potential corruption. Meanwhile, the controversy is drawing comparisons to the infamous ’90-degree’ Railway Overbridge (ROB) case in Bhopal, where the state government suspended eight PWD engineers and blacklisted the construction agencies involved.

Serious questions are now being raised regarding the alignment changes, increased costs, and the utilization of government resources for this Ujjain bridge project. If the allegations are substantiated, this matter could become one of the most high-profile infrastructure controversies in the state.
