Incidents of people being swindled and superstition being spread in the name of buried treasure and occult rituals (*tantra-mantra*) are frequently surfacing in Madhya Pradesh. A sensational case from the capital, Bhopal, has shaken the entire state. Here, a father murdered his own 17-year-old daughter after being misled by an alleged Tantrik. The accused had been convinced that a treasure worth crores was buried in his field and that a “sacrifice” was essential to retrieve it.
According to the police investigation, Chain Singh Kushwaha, a resident of the Sukhi Sewaniya area in Bhopal, was lured by a Tantrik with the promise of a gold and silver treasure hidden in his field. During a ritual, the Tantrik claimed that a “Baba” (deity/spirit) resided within the girl’s body and that the treasure could not be obtained without sacrificing her. Consumed by superstition, the father murdered his daughter and buried her body in the field.
The police initiated an investigation after a complaint regarding the daughter’s disappearance was filed. The case came to light when a skeleton was later discovered in the field. Based on the investigation, the police have arrested the father and an accomplice, while the search for the alleged Tantrik is ongoing.
Superstition is becoming a cause for heinous crimes.
