Today marks the third Monday of the holy month of Sawan and also Nag Panchami. Thousands of devotees have gathered at Ujjain’s Mahakal temple complex to offer prayers at both the Mahakal and Nagchandreshwar shrines.
The Nagchandreshwar temple opens only once a year—on Nag Panchami—for a period of just 24 hours. It opened at midnight last night and will remain open for darshan until midnight tonight; devotees from across the country flock here for the occasion.
A short while ago, a rumor regarding an electric shock at the Nagchandreshwar temple triggered a stampede-like situation. People began running in panic to save themselves, causing iron barricades within the temple complex to collapse. There are reports of several devotees sustaining injuries.
However, the Mahakal temple administration has denied any reports of disorder or a stampede.
