Vidisha, Madhya Pradesh: A shocking situation has emerged from Vidisha district, where dozens of schoolchildren from Kakrua and nearby villages are forced to risk their lives every day by crossing the nine pillars of a stop dam over the Betwa River to attend school.
With school bags on their shoulders and the river flowing dangerously beneath them, the children carefully balance themselves across the narrow concrete pillars. During the monsoon season, rising water levels make the crossing even more hazardous, increasing the risk of a fatal accident.
After videos and photographs of the children’s daily struggle surfaced, the Madhya Pradesh High Court took suo motu cognizance of the matter and sought a response from the state government. The court questioned why schoolchildren are being forced to endanger their lives for education and why a permanent solution has not yet been provided.
Residents say they have been demanding a bridge for years, but no concrete action has been taken. Until a permanent bridge is built, they have urged the government to arrange a safe alternative route for students.
